A Well-kept Secret In Music II Was Errol Maynard ever known for the complete musician he is? By Kenrick Georges July 27, 2013. Apart from the rigid discipline that Mr. Errol Maynard brought to the classroom, intent on making boys into men of good character, he exposed his classes to a wide array of artistic studies; music was just one segment. Often enough, teacher Maynard would bring a different musical instrument to school and do as much as he can to get, at least, the basics of music across. Some of these instruments, like the bass clarinet, for instance, I, and many others had not seen before. But when I got to the SKN Defense Force Band, in 1967, there he was again, and I, with a better understanding of music, could better appreciate his expertise. Mr. Maynard played every family of wind instrument between cup and reeds. Mr. Errol Maynard, I guess by default, was very thorough and methodical; it showed in everything he did…music was no exception. However, apart from his versatility in executing on instruments, his transcribing (music writing skills) was beyond impeccable. I happened to see a sheet of music that he had just written, and it was unbelievable—it looked like it came fresh off a printing press. But then again, he had excellent penmanship as a result of his artistic gift. My determination from then on was to write/transcribe music, at least, as well as Mr. Errol Maynard did. As a result, transcribing music is one of the things for which I became well known in my musical orbit. Mr. Errol Maynard: a super talent. And although one with extraordinary instructional ability, he was not, by any measure, utilized to share his knowledge with those whom it would have best serve: the young generation of that period. Just to make it clear, it was no fault of his.
