A Williamston mans family received justice nearly 10 years after he was murdered for a drug-related debt. Keith Tyrone Cofields body was found floating in the Tar River in Old Sparta March 13, 2004, according to a press release issued by the Edgecombe County Sheriffs Office. Cofield was reported missing Feb. 29, 2004 by the Martin County Sheriffs Office. An autopsy indicated that Cofield died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. His body was dumped in the Tar River. The press release doesnt mention whether or not Cofield or the suspects have any ties to Edgecombe County. Two of the four suspects are brothers. Anthony Mayes, Jr., 33, and Antoine Mayes, 30, were convicted May 14 by a federal jury in Brooklyn, NY of Cofields murder. Dan Myrick and James Bowers, both of Williamston, were also convicted of Cofields death during an earlier trial. They were sentenced to life in prison. A press release issued by the U.S. Department of Justice states the brothers operated an enterprise from an East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY and in another one in Williamston.
