A Willingness to Go OCTOBER 23, 2013 Today’s Reflection THE SISTERS OF CHARITY community in Calcutta relates the following story. When Mother Teresa received the regular shipment of shoes, she would invite all the sisters to come and take a pair, knowing that each of them spent much of the day on her feet. Only after everyone else had selected a pair would Mother take her shoes. They seldom fit. When she prayed in the chapel, she would take off her shoes and kneel barefoot. Those who knelt behind her could see her twisted and calloused feet. At the close of today’s passage [Romans 10:5-15], Paul celebrates the beauty of the feet that carry the gospel. He emphasizes proclamation – how can anyone hear about Jesus unless they are told? And how can they be told unless someone is sent to proclaim the news? Strikingly, Paul, in this urgent call to evangelism, does not focus on the need for a golden tongue but on the necessity of feet. Preaching the good news relies less on lofty ideas and persuasive speech than on a willingness to go. To go and tell the good news about an event that has changed everything once and for all. … Guide my feet, Lord, so that they show forth the beauty of your love. Amen.
