A Word for Today Gracious and Compassionate ‘The Words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself’ -Ecc 10:12(KJV) The bible says that God is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love, these characteristics ought to be evident in our lives, our text makes us understand that it is wisdom to be gracious. Joseph found himself in a fix in Matthew 1:19, his betrothed wife was found to be pregnant and the baby did not belong to him, this was a serious situation and ‘in the flesh’, Joseph had every right to react, to get angry at the seemingly betrayal of Mary, his espoused wife. However the bible records in Matt 1:19 that Joseph was a gracious man, even though he could have publicly disgraced Mary which was the norm then, he made up his mind to protect her image and minimize her humiliation. It is amazing that Joseph did all of these things ignorant of the fact that he was within a divine plan, he had no clue that God was at work, probably testing him to see if he was fit enough to be the earthly Father of HIS son Jesus Christ. Joseph passed in flying colors because he was gracious, God could see His characteristics in the life of this man called Joseph, He knew He could trust him that when Jesus Christ grew up and started to manifest His power, Joseph was not going to be intimidated. Today we are being challenged to be gracious, a gracious person exhibits courtesy and politeness, even when we are right and the other person is wrong, we can act graciously, we can show them mercy and compassion, we can correct in love with a humble heart, Joseph could have easily made a fool of himself if he had treated Mary with disdain and later found out the truth. Note that every action is a seed, it will surely return as an harvest, make up your mind this year to be gracious to people around you and you will be amazed how favour will flow towards you.
