A Year Ago Today As the Bob Barker continues to pursue the Thunder south of Africa and the Sam Simon searches for three other tooth fish poachers in the Southern Ocean, the Cove Guardians continue to stand their ground in Taiji. Cove Guardians have been there every day since September 1st, 2014 and will remain on the ground until the end of the season at the beginning of March. They have done so for five years and will continue to do so next year. It is called Operation Infinite Patience and Sea Shepherd will not allow a single dolphin to be captured or killed out of sight and thus out of mind. The on-going horrific atrocities carried out by the thugs of Taiji will not take place secretly or quietly. When a dolphin screams, the Cove Guardians lifestream that scream to the entire world. It was a year ago today that one of the worst massacres happened in Taiji. That was the day that a baby albino dolphin that we named Shoujo was captured after they slaughtered her protective mother. The on-going slaughter of dolphins and whales by Japanese whalers and fishermen is an international disgrace and brings shame unto all the Japanese people. Is this really the nation where the Olympics will be held, where this horror will serve as the symbol for Japan to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Surely the average Japanese citizen must be ashamed that such bloody images of slaughter, the screams of dying dolphins and the sheer brutality of their killers is how many people perceive Japan to be. As a Canadian I have been ashamed all my life about the slaughter of seals yet I always had the one consolation that a majority of Canadians opposed the slaughter, spoke out against the slaughter, took to the streets and championed a European ban on seal products. Unfortunately in Japan, the average person is silent. The screams fall on willfully deaf ears and the Japanese media looks away as right wing politicians defend the killings with absurd charges of racism in defense of this obscene justification that dolphins and whales are a part of their food culture.
