A Zanesville Police officer was injured early Thursday morning after he was attacked by a pit bull owned by a suspect in a burglary. Captain Tony Coury says it started around midnight as a burglary at 705 Findlay Avenue. Coury says a suspect broke into a garage and took a shop vacuum and used it to try to steal quarters from a coin operated car wash on State Street. Captain Coury says a Zanesville police officer saw the suspect and chased him to a Lee Street home where the suspect released a pit bull which bit the officer on the wrist. The officer shot the dog in defense. Muskingum County Sheriff’s deputies and Highway Patrol troopers were called in and helped arrest the suspect out of the attic of the home. The suspect – whose name was not released, will likely be charged with assault on a police officer using a dog. The officer was treated at the hospital. The dog was injured and removed by the Muskingum County Dog Warden and will be euthanized. The incident remains under investigation.
