A basic course on the traditional dress of the Kankana-ey Igorot - TopicsExpress

A basic course on the traditional dress of the Kankana-ey Igorot woman. We have several traditional skirts which we call ingay. The ones in the photo here is the inlay which we call pinagpagan. It first one is what we commonly wear. The second has a design called baak which means old. So it must be one of the older designs of the pinagpagan which is not very easy to weave, thus not so common. The third one is yet another design which mainly has the shield in the middle. The last picture is the bakget or the belt which we wear with the ingay. With the coming of the velcro, we have our skirts fastened with velcro so if we are lazy to use the bakget, we can rely on the velcro to keep it together. In the olden times our ancestors did not wear blouses or tops. Now, we cannot do that so our blouses are more modern. All these skirts and belts are woven through backstrap weaving. So it takes months to finish one of them.
