A batch of sub freezing weather is lingering in the area for the next few days and with it a danger of hypothermia. According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio, temperatures in counties along the Ohio River in norther Kentucky and southern Ohio on Wednesday are expected to hover at zero degrees with possible wind chill calculations at 10 to 15 degrees below zero through Thursday. According to the Centers for Disease Control website, symptoms of hypothermia can vary depending on how long someone is exposed to the cold temperatures. Symptoms, fatigue, loss of coordination, and confusion and disorientation are early symptoms someone may be in distress from exposure to cold conditions. In later stages of exposure, shivering may cease, but skin may be blue, pupils dilated, pulse and breathing slower and a loss of consciousness may occur. Helping someone with symptoms of hypothermia who is conscious, includes moving them to a warm room or shelter, removal of any wet clothing, warming their body core, use of warm beverages and getting them to medical attention. Performing CPR is necessary if they are unconscious with no pulse, along with a call to 911 for help. Some people cannot avoid working in chilling weather, so precautions should be taken to layer clothing and monitor for hypothermia symptoms. Whenever temperatures drop decidedly below normal and as wind speed increases, heat can more rapidly leave the body. These weather-related conditions may lead to serious health problems, CDC officials said. In addition to preventing human over-exposure tot he cold, care should also be taken to provide feed, water and shelter for livestock and pets.
