A beautiful piece by sister Nabeela Kapery Noorani Nabeela Kapery Noorani *Country, still in waiting* As I walk the streets of a country accursed, I see the order of things as it would from bad to worse. The wind sounds the call, it screams into my ear, That a new minute has started, reminding me to fear. It tells the tale of theft, a theft of the worst kind. A theft not by your pocket, but your body, soul and mind. For in this minute changing our nation rainbow to grey, Another woman as had her honour ripped and taken away. As I walk the streets of a nation once beaming with pride, I see a people who have sold their souls, living to hide. A people whos parents fought battles in times of bloodshed, Now willingly hurt and kill, defining it as painting the town red. As I walk the streets of this great country going into turmoil, I kneel down and see all the fallen tears in its polluted soil. There in the dirt I see bits and pieces of hopes and dreams, I see its dismal remains, rising up to the heavens through the bleak sunbeam. As I walk the streets a country, so culturally diverse, I see synchronized crimes carried out, perfectly rehearsed. I thought people only killed for money and greed, How sad is this day, when people kill over colour, nationality and creed. As I walk the streets of a country filled with crime, I look to my wristwatch to check my valuable time. I make my way to the school at which I teach, I pray you dear Allah just one youth, may I please reach? I ask for one, just one life to change, If just this one soul is the only one in my range, Then I am content, my job is done, Because reformation needs but only one. As I walk the streets of a country in need, I pray you Allah, may Your wise calls they heed. For the sake of our children to prevent their awaiting destruction, I walk the hopeful streets of a South Africa under construction. Nabeela kapery
