A big step forward as a community in protecting and helping our sisters Yesterday was a big day in our community in Calgary, al hamdulillah. There was a sister whose husband was not providing for her or her child, and it has been 2 years since his last visit, and he refuses to divorce her. She filed a complaint with our masjid a few months back and al hamdulillah, yesterday we were able to gather 3 Imams from 2 different organizations to Islamically free this sister from her oppressive husband. Were hoping this initial meeting will be a catalyst in establishing an official council that will help and protect our sisters in oppressive marriages. I strongly urge each community to establish such councils to help our sisters. The stories out there are just horrendous. As a word of advice to our sisters living in the west please get legally married as well when you do your Nikah. This will ensure that your rights are legally protected, insha Allah.
