A bighted structure at 810 Meade Ave. in North Bellport was demolished this morning in order to make way for a newly constructed residence in 2015. The property will be sold to the Jaramillo/Marquez family after they help build their future home. The project is made possible through a partnership between Suffolk County, the Town of Brookhaven and Habitat for Humanity. I joined Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilwoman Connie Kepert, the Jaramillo/Marquez family and volunteers from Habitat for Humanity to partake in the demolition of the vacant building that sat on the parcel. The property had been taken by Suffolk County for failure to pay taxes and transferred to the Town of Brookhaven for affordable housing. The ground breaking for the Jaramillo/Marquez family’s new home will take place in the Spring, and the family will help build the structure throughout 2015 along with Habitat for Humanity volunteers. Once built, families continue to give back by helping to build future Habitat for Humanity homes. It is extremely gratifying to see another derelict property removed from the North Bellport community. Working in conjunction with the Town of Brookhaven and Habitat for Humanity we have kept dozens of properties from being auctioned off to speculators, and instead have helped families to realize the American Dream. Homeownership is the bedrock of every thriving neighborhood, and this property is just another piece of the larger vision we all share for Bellport. I look forward to seeing the construction of a beautiful home on this parcel in 2015.
