A bill authorizing intelligence agencies to collect and retain the - TopicsExpress

A bill authorizing intelligence agencies to collect and retain the private communications of any individual, U.S. citizens included was passed by the Senate this week. The bill is HR 4681, the section of concern is 309. Section 309, among others is a recent addition so itll be going back to the House for review. The Free Thought Projects coverage is here, thefreethoughtproject/breaking-congress-secretly-okd-nsa-spying-domestic-criminal-cases-focused-torture/ You can read the bill text here, https://congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/house-bill/4681/text?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr Although there are provisions included in the section to limit collections these limitations are useless since agencies are allowed to self-authorize unlimited retention of peoples private communications and information under 309(B)vii so long as they write a note to congress about it (there are no standards for plausibility or reasonableness included in the subsection, meaning that its literally just a note excusing the retention). I recognize that the United States security state is already performing the pervasive collection and retention of massive bulks of peoples private information and has been doing so for years, but making this properly legal is only going to make it worse. I refuse to let it go idly by. Also the media has, by and large been completely useless on this. Im getting really tired of that.
