A bit blunt, but spot on... In my opinion, a person cannot fully make a declaration such as this until they are old enough to understand what it means. A young child cannot fully understand the reality around them without guidance or explanation. It sounds to me like these parents wanted a son, could not love their child for who SHE was, and in not doing so, the girl discovered that she got attention by declaring herself as a boy. Dont get me wrong, I am not homophobic. People are who they are and can live whatever lifestyle they choose. God loved us enough to give us the ability to make choices for ourselves. Those choices do not make anyone better than another. Unless you dont love your child for who they are. In that case, I am better than you.
