A bit of Christmas trivia..... Did you know that Animal Crackers have a connection to Christmas? The first batch of Animal Crackers was said to date to the turn of the Twentieth Century, in York, Pennsylvania. National Biscuit Company began marketing them in 1902 in shapes of circus animals. However, for the Christmas season they designed the famous box with the string on it so that it would hang on a Christmas tree. The original box sold for 5 cents each. thirty-seven different animals have been included in the shapes since 1902. Today a variety of 22 animals appear in the boxes and the most recent addition was the koala bear, that was added in 2002 for the 100th Anniversary, in a customer voting. All the crackers are produced in the Fair Lawn, New Jersey plant of Nabisco Brands. More than 40 million packages of Animal Crackers are sold each year. Today youll find: giraffe, gorllas, bears, bisons, elephants, camels, cougars, hippopotamus, hyenas, kangaroos, monkeys, lions, rhinoceros, sheep, seals, tigers, zebras, and koala bears.
