A bit of R.E.M. nerdiness, for those who are interested... I have the combination CD/DVD re-release of Automatic for the People that came out in 2005. On the DVD, theres a 5.1 mix of the album, which allows for a lot of instrument & vocal separation. I also have software that allows me to extract and listen to each channel of the 5.1 audio separately. Most of the time, stuff thats panned in the middle on a stereo recording (bass guitar, kick drum, snare drum, lead vocals) will be in the center channel of a 5.1 mix. And heres the thing... ALMOST NOTHING ELSE will be in that center channel most of the time. This is great, because it means that Michael Stipes sometimes-mush-mouthy vocals are left largely uncluttered by all the other instruments. And as a result, I uncovered an always-misheard lyric at the end of the song Ignoreland. If youre not familiar with the track, about 4:02 into the song, Stipe does a bit of a random spoken word line that, to just about everyone, sounded like This is not a revolution, I didnt do the revolution, thank you. BUT, upon listening to the center channel of the 5.1 mix, I discovered that hes actually saying And that takes us out of the record and into the revolution. Take it. A small-but-significant difference.
