A bit of advice for guys who seek repairs from the large - TopicsExpress

A bit of advice for guys who seek repairs from the large companies: Almost without exception, it is almost ridiculous to ask for repairs or repair parts these days. Since most stock comes in containers from China, sans spare or repair parts, there is very little can be done for them, other than reprogramming problems. With no repair parts on hand, keeping repair technicians on payroll is ridiculous, and the paperwork trail is costly. Most so-called manufacturers havent either parts or people. You are better off sending them the entire loco. They would rather give you a new one, no questions asked. It is far cheaper. Unless youve taken a road flare to it, you will probably not get any argument, even without a receipt. If the item is out-of-stock with them, you are probably SOL and better off seeking a parts loco on eBay to cannibalize. As a self-employed repair guy and custom builder, I can tell you that no repairman worth his salt will work for minimum wage in order to spend 2-3 hours repairing your loco for what youd likely pay. I charge $40/hour. Most of the repairs I handle (severe damage, paint, etc...) are to pieces of sentimental or collector value. I have to scrounge and save parts wherever I can find them---parts I may NEVER have a use for. The supply of parts and guys with the skills or knowledge just isnt there. If you find one, keep him and pay him.
