A bit of pre-festive seaon prose. Loads missed out, but hope you enjoy it. Another Facebook year has passed, and what a year it’s been. The photos that were posted and the places we have seen. From Brampton up to Hady, Spital and New Whit. Newbold, Brim and Boythorpe. As we remember it. We’ve viewed, debated, argued, laughed. Was the biggest gripe of all, The Pomegranate roundabout, or what they’ve done to Market Hall? It’s time to hit the shops now, and all that stress and fuss. At least we’re safe on High Street from being knocked down by a bus! A jumbo pack of toilet rolls, that’s just the thing for Nan. Get ‘em on the market, where once stood the fruit & veg man. She’ll tell me of the old days. “It were better”, she believes. Of how she misses Woodhead’s, and for her chemist she still Greaves. But town is busy, shops are full. As are the numerous car parks. Though a fire claimed Littlewoods, next door’s still Marks & Sparks. And if the festive lights are few, despite the corpo’s best intents, Yes, Geldof! We know it’s Christmas. There’s a star on top of Dent’s. If the kids behave thissens, we’ll take them, so they say, To see the ghost of Santa Past in that big shop on Elder Way. Then home via the Monkey Park, in spite of it being nippy. I wish we’d stopped for dinner and a warm in Bowden’s chippy. And pretty soon the boys and girls of tarn will get the chance, To cop off with a sweetheart at the company dinner-dance. But those companies and industries have long since gone, you see. Trebor, Robbo’s, Sheepbridge Works, Markham’s, NCB……. No trains will run from Market Place, or Central, more’s the pity. Let’s not get started on Horns Bridge! Leave out the nitty gritty! Stations, shops and offices. No great history was made. At Turner’s, White’s, Cantor’s, or in Stephenson’s Arcade. But they are part of Chesterfield, in our hearts they will remain. As we don rose-tinted glasses for a stroll down Vicar/Memory Lane. Places once familiar, no more will they be seen. But we can ride past where they were, on a bus that won’t be green. I say no more will they be seen. Wrong! I hear you grouse. We can visit them on Facebook, with each click of the mouse. And while we’re at it, maybe we should raise a glass as well, Although it’s long past closing time at The Alma or Horns Hotel. What gems wait there in cyberspace, next year to give us kicks? So here’s to our community at Old Chesterfield Pics!
