A black kid from Oakland scores 2100 on his SAT and has a 5.0 GPA and its national news? And this doesnt seem like a problem to anyone else? The problem is just because of how this young man looks and where hes from, its assumed he cant be exceptional in a classroom. Many black kids get athletic scholarships out of Oakland. And no one bats and eye. But boy, when one kid gets accepted to an Ivy League school because of his academics....... -----Call in the news team!!!!! Boss, we done found us one of them smart niggas!!! Get us a camera!!!!!---- This is 2014 right? If an article about a black kid from Oakland who gets accepted to an Ivy League school surprises you, then youre part of the problem. Im sorry for having no idea what an Ivy League student is supposed to look like. Or where hes supposed to be from. Maybe Im just so naive I believe anyone can do anything if they put in the work. Maybe Im just so naive I assumed appearance had nothing to do with intelligence. Or maybe, just maybe, theres still a ton of stubborn assholes who are ignorant enough to believe they can judge ignorance by nothing more than someones appearance. Excuse me while I choke on the irony. This kid didnt break down any barriers or overcome any odds. We make up those bullshit barriers and odds. This kid isnt affected by those bullshit constraints that we place in front of him because he knows they dont really exist. And for that reason, I applaud him. But in 2014, if this scenario still surprises us, then Im disappointed in us, sadly, even more than I applaud him.
