A blessed day with Gods and Pitrus (ancestors) at DevaPrayaga, the divine origination of GANGA- the headstream of Indian mythology and culture. The dharma of Gangama is that her Putras can have ‘Icha or swachanda mruthyu’(one can choose own death) like Bheeshma pitha maha. Usually this celestial point is known only as DEVA-PRAYAGA (Gods-union) but yesterday and today being Sarva Pitru Amavasya, became DEVA PITRU PRAYAGA. According to mythology and hydrology DEVA-PRAYAGA is the confluence of rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi. Alaknanda with five mergings (panchaprayaga) and Bhagirathi with six mergings, flowing through all divine points of Himagiri ( Himalayas) converges here to form the most purifying element or organ as Ganga ( Triloka pada Gamana Agamana Anga). Molecularly have the medicinal characteristics or srothes to rejuvenate all saptha dhatus or seven basic tissues. Pitrus are spiritual ancestors (mostly mistaken to biological ancestors) reside at a realm called Pitruloka in between heaven and earth. The tarpans in fortnight of Pitrupaksha are in respect of all spiritual ancestors and pinda dhana or antya samskara is only for the deceased biological ancestors. It is believed that Goddess Durga starts her journey in Vishwaroopa from here for accepting Durgapoojas. To convey the respects to her, all Pitrus come down to Devaprayaga and that is why called as SARVA PITRU AMAVASYA or MAHA LAYA (Great Merging) amavasya. So I am concluding my Ganga trail here as a sub-atom to be with them. Pics courtesy Abha dutt.
