A bunch of new movies are slated for release this year that Christians are happy about. While its good that there seems to be a trend to make such movies, dont be caught off guard. Just because something claims to be Christian doesnt mean it is. Just because something claims to be true doesnt mean it is. If you choose to see these, dont go in blind. I havent seen any of the films yet so I dont know a lot of specifics, but there are plenty of people who do. Check out some reviews by people who know their theology. Take the good and toss the bad. Dont fall for thinking that other movies are entertainment, but this movie is different. They are *all* for entertainment. To whatever degree any movie says true things, thats great! If a movie starts worthwhile thoughts or conversations, thats great too. But if they have you uncritically swallowing tales that are unsubstantiated, thats not great. One specific example. Heaven is For Real is just a bad idea all the way around. (I agree that heaven is real, as far as that statement goes, but even that statement needs a lot of qualifications.) The actual ideas in the book/movie are just bad. If you want to watch it, fine. But watch it more like you would watch The Sixth Sense than a historical documentary. It is (presumably) well-intentioned story telling with little to no factual basis. The trailers are making the circuit now, and they sound very much like something we would want to affirm, but examining it critically reveals some serious problems. This is already way too long for a status update, but tis the season that a lot of these things start circulating. What better time to encourage some healthy skepticism and critical thinking?
