A call was made today for more male involvement in Family Planning to promote mutual planning and bonding for couples and to maintain a sustained use and demand for Family Planning services. Dr. Olusesan Ishola-Gbenla, the Quality Improvement & System Strengthening Officer (QI/SS) for Nigeria Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), Benin field office, made the call on the programme, DAYBREAK on Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS/TV). While responding to questions from viewers, he said Family Planning is for the whole family, hence there should be spousal communication between couples on Family Planning and that it would not be out of place if both partners are together during FP counseling as male involvement is very important. Dr Gbenla also mentioned the various modern Family Planning methods available and encouraged viewers to go for the long lasting methods whose efficacy and effectiveness have been proven. He enlightened viewers on the benefits of Family Planning for the woman, the man and the family as a whole. Questions bothering on side effects of some of the Family Planning methods were answered, while myths and misconceptions were dispelled. The QI/SS Officer said NURHI works through existing community groups to provide accurate information on Family Planning to correct such misconceptions. In response to where Family Planning services can be accessed in the city, Dr Gbenla mentioned the various government owned hospitals supported by NURHI in the three LGAs of Egor, Oredo & Ikpoba-Okha and reiterated that Family Planning services are free.
