A car story for Dennis Dills. After noticing a *bad sound* - TopicsExpress

A car story for Dennis Dills. After noticing a *bad sound* coming from under my hood on the way home from Lexington Monday night, I made a mental note to stop at the Marathon station Tuesday morning before heading to Roanoke, then on to Blacksburg. Unfortunately, I forgot until I was on the road to Roanoke and once again heard the *bad sound* coming from the front right side of the car. In Roanoke, I confessed my car sins to the people at Evans House and received both sympathy and judgment. I vowed to seek a service station, but I had to be in Blacksburg by 2:00, so I pushed aside memories of the *bad sound* and worked blissfully through the morning until it was time to leave for Blacksburg. The *bad sound* had gotten worse--of course everything is worse on I-81S--but I really did decide I had better take it easy and get myself to a service station in Blacksburg. Because I was traveling a little slower than is normal, I was pushing it a bit to get to Blacksburg on time. And heres where good fortune and quite possibly stupidity intersect. There is a service station conveniently located on S. Main thats lots closer to the building I needed to get to on campus than my usual parking space at the Episcopal Church. I whipped in there, *bad sound* announcing my arrival, and said to the attendant: Heres my car. Its making a bad sound. Can you fix it? Yes, he said. Well call you with an estimate. No, I replied. Im going to a friends dissertation defense and wont be able to answer my phone for two hours. I have to trust you. I need it fixed because I have to drive back to Lynchburg tonight. Please just do whatever you need to do. I trust you. And so I have new brakes!
