A celebrity’s death can bring attention to serious illnesses, in - TopicsExpress

A celebrity’s death can bring attention to serious illnesses, in this case depression. If you see warning signs of depression or you think a friend may be depressed, ASK! Talking with a friend about suicide does not mean that someone will commit suicide. Some people have the false idea that if you bring up suicide with someone, who may be suffering from depression, it will put ideas in his/her head and they will act on it. This is untrue. If you ask a friend/loved one about suicide and he/she shares that they have been thinking about it or that they see it as a possibility, you don’t have to fix it or have all the right answers in that moment. The best thing you can do is listen, support, be a friend, and help connect that person to resources. The NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) has great info on their website as does NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) at nami.org. Locally, or state-wide, anyone can call the Crisis Line, 24 hours a day, at 1-800-631-1314. --Marleigh O’Meara, Director of Behavioral Health Services Valle del Sol
