A central team recently conducted a survey in Majuli in Jorhat district to explore the feasibility of setting up an ayurvedic research centre and college on the river island. The team explored a few areas, belonging to Vaishnavite monasteries, on the island on Friday. They met the sub- divisional administrative officials and satradhikars (head priests) of the monasteries to discuss their plans. Uttar Kamalabari satra (monastery) satradhikar Janardan Deva Goswami said, The Centres team, led by a doctor from Delhi, visited Chitadarchook and Fulani in the Garmur area here. The members expressed satisfaction after spotting plots which meet their requirement. They want more than 500 bighas on the island for both institutions and we are trying to provide the same. However, plots in different locations near Garmur will be allotted. They also have plans for a medicinal tree plantation, he added. Union minister and Lakhimpur MP Sarbananda Sonowal gave the proposal for setting up the ayurvedic centre. Accordingly, the government sent the team to conduct a primary survey on the island. A feasibility report is awaited.
