A challenge for folks and hopefully maybe a paradigm shift. I - TopicsExpress

A challenge for folks and hopefully maybe a paradigm shift. I would like to propose a challenge for teachers here (and students who get together with training partners outside of class time). Part1: For the next 3 months practice much (or all) of your self-defense techniques and kata bunkai from kakie, as well as a static crossed hands position (see picture). Part2: After a few weeks of this, begin to have your uke try to block your attacks in this bunkai training. This is a good method to introduce resistive training as well a more dynamic take on bunkai training. This sort of thing leads more or less directly into renzoku-bunkai practice and should give you insight into why the kata follows a particular sequence. Part3: For the next 3 months practice a free exchange of techniques in kakie, as well as free-fighting from a static crossed hands position. This free-fighting should allow low kicks, elbows, knees, trapping/grabbing, some throwing, and controlled standing joint-locking. At first this free-fighting should be low intensity (medium speed) with only light contact (or maybe even no contact if it feels alien and hard to deal with). Gradually the intensity can be increased especially with the addition of some safety equipment. Pay attention to whether you find your free-fighting starts to merge with with your bunkai training and vice-versa. What insights do you gain. Does your appreciation for muchimi, limb control, and tactile sensitivity improve. Please give this a try and share you experiences and thoughts here. (BTW I know this will be extremely old news for many folks here, but I think a large majority will find this extremely interesting and rewarding).
