A class had been assigned to read Beowulf (online or wherever)---the following day, a short written test was given to see if the students have indeed read the epic---a few did while others were guessing but about three answers referred to Beowulf as the naked warrior the whole time. In all my almost 30 years of teaching, I have never come across that line which suggests that Beowulf was a warrior who fought without his clothes on. So I asked the students concerned where they got the preposterous idea. And the answer? From the movie Madam. That is the danger of just watching the movie version of a book or epic without having reading it beforehand. Or, was that really the movie version of the epic? Or was that just an alibi to justify their answer? Madam, lets just watch the movie Beowulf. Yeah, after you read an excerpt of it. You read first, then we might try to watch it later.
