A client asked me about asymmetry and dominant sides yesterday, so this is timely. Unilateral training is your friend. Machines that work both limbs at the same time have their function in the timeline and spectrum of your training, but working each side separately can help address existing imbalances in your physique and help avoid creating new ones... Understand this: no human frame is perfectly symmetric, and sports can accentuate the disparity in dominant vs. non-dominant sides. This leads to - improving symmetry: I incorporate quite a lot of unilateral training in the gym with myself and all clients, working the non-dominant side first, and letting that side dictate the number of reps and sets to do on the other side. With all other exercises, you must work on mind-muscle control perhaps to an even greater extent. This means focusing on pulling or pushing equally with both sides, even when you are close to fatigue. Improving muscle symmetry is great for stage.. but more importantly, its great for helping to prevent injuries! Because if you are injured....you cant train!
