A client had a run in with the Vawtrack infection today. Basically its a middle man virus that sits dormant on your computer until you try and login to your online banking system. It then masquerades itself as an extra security measure, texts a Pin code to your phone which is actually a transaction authorisation code for your account to transfer money to another account. Luckily this client was not UK based and realised their error so the £1400 was initially taken but they called their bank straight away who cancelled the transaction because they could, however it was to a UK bank account so if you were based in the UK, it may have been too late under the faster payment system. This backdoor access is run by high tech fraudsters and is extremely convincing, they essentially have several templates depending on your bank with the correct branding and send what look like genuine SMS texts. And guess what, the client had anti-virus protection that had been disabled (unknowingly) but another virus in the package that was downloaded (masquerading as an Adobe Flash Player update). However, Malwarebytes found the infections on a scan afterwards and removed them. Be careful out there, be very aware of what you are downloading and installing on and the pop ups that you are clicking on. Go and download Malwarebytes free from malwarebytes.org and run a full scan as often as possible to try and stay safe! If you have any online security questions, please do drop us a line!
