A colleague of mine informed me of a GP diagnosis made over the phone to one of her patients that she had sciatica! Based upon patient commentary to her GP pain on the anterior medial thigh it is unlikely that this diagnosis is accurate. However the GP proceeded to prescribe Naproxin 500mg, twice daily for 12 weeks!! All the patient had to do was call into reception and acquire the prescription,,,,,,,, I am not of mind to tarnish the medical profession with the same brush, but, is this what we call HEALTH CARE? Long term exposure to many pharmaceutical medications have side effects, some severe, some not so severe. The point to be highlighted in this commentary is the gross inadequacy of a medical qualified practitioner to understand their limitations of practice (scope) and to add further to this inadequacy, an ignorance to prescribe a 12 week course of medication which has a renowned reputation of leading to fatigue and drowsiness! This patient who is a young mother of two school going children, who drives the children to and from school, is already complaining of these side effects,,,,,,,surely the GP informed patient of these side effects you say,,,,,NO! If we the general public are prepared to accept this utter nonsense then we must accept the consequences. We are very vocal about issues that can have an effect on family and other socio-economic attributes in life, so why oh why do we not take our HEALTH as serious?
