A collection of vintage police cars have gone on display in Queanbeyan, southern NSW, to help mark National Police Remembrance Day. The exhibition includes a range of cars from different eras, dating back as far as 1901. One of them, an Overland Roadster, is thought to be one of oldest vehicles linked to an Australian police force. It was actually owned by Earnest Charles Day, who was the inspector general of police in Sydney in 1912, car collector Nick Nowak said. Mr Nowak said the Model 59 vehicle was the only one of its kind to be brought to Australia. National Police Remembrance Day ceremonies across the country culminated at the National Police Memorial on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. The sunset service paid tribute to 757 Australian officers who died while on duty. Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove talked to the officers, officials and the families of fallen police at the ceremony. He described the sacrifice police men and women made for the good of the public.
