A combined total of 505 yearlings have been accepted for the three days of selling at Karaka on February 17, and Christchurch on the 18 and 19. Despite the predictions of a huge drop in numbers this is only 10 down on last year’s total. In saying that, Auckland is down 40 lots to 143, mainly being the 30 southern horses not going to Auckland, while Christchurch has an increased entry of almost 30 to 362. The fact will not be lost on most trainers and buyers that these yearlings come from a foaling year which is 20-25% smaller than those crops which make up our current racing crop. So demand will be strong. Bettor’s Delight who incredibly has held the mantle of leading All Age Sire in the USA, Australia and New Zealand (last 3 years) has absolutely dominated the entries with 90 off-spring (60 colts and 30 fillies). He has 35 yearlings, 25% of the catalogue in Auckland and 55 entered in Christchurch.
