A comment of mine: The root problem is that a majority of Australians do not accept Australia’s obligations under the Refugee Convention…or any rate that is what the conventional wisdom amounts to. The usual way of dealing with a disjunct between what the majority of people want and what a powerful or active minority wants is to arrange a bipartisan consensus to shut the people out. Privatisation for example. Refugee advocates in Australia have foolishly tried to pursue this policy of shutting the people out, and it failed because hey it is only human lives we are dealing with here not corporate profit. So we have reached a place where the Rudd Solution very likely is the least bad practically available. Let that be a lesson. The long road home involves engaging the people, not shutting them out, and dealing with the the refugee question on the basis of working class internationalism rather than noblesse oblige. As a beginning, let us have a referendum on the Refugee Convention.
