A commentator wrote this in the Spectator...... Do you blame him? Islam has always been restrictive. Muslim social conscience never addressed slavery, for instance - because the Koran justifies it and Mohammad had slaves. There are no Wilberforces in Islam. And where are the Muslim Pankhursts? Art was restricted to patterns and Arabic script because depicting living creatures was deemed un-Islamic. There are no Van Goghs, Michelangelos or Turners in Islam. Music and poetry are also un-Islamic - because Mohammad said so. (Omar Khayam was a Sufi - regarded as heretics by mainstream Sunni Islam). There were no Beethovens or Mozarts in Islam. There are over a billion Muslims in the world and they have yet to produce a composer who even reaches the standard of Benny and Bjorn from Abba. And dotted throughout the past liberal heritage you speak of are forced conversions and massacres of non-Muslims - in every single country they over-ran. Not to mention the harvesting of slaves. If anything, Islam today is better than it was - but that is only because the West is militarily dominant at the moment. If the boot was on the other foot, though...
