A compilation on the exploits of 21 men who were awarded the highest medals of courage. These men, from every part of India and of every faith, died in the defence of an idea greater than freedom: they fought in defence of the idea of India. The very patches of land these men protected or reclaimed have history written on them — their histories, of their regiments, of the battle, and of the war. The place-names have thus been immortalised and ring like poetry: the familiar Khem Karan, Rezang La, Richhmar, Sirijap, Buttar Dograndi, Gangasagar, Basantar, Saltoro Ridge; the unfamiliar North Jaffna; and the unlikely Elizabethville.
