A complex technical operation,like a mine, must be organizationally structured to ensure that the Board is kept apprised of technical ‘areas of concern’ ...why not create a Corporate Technical Officer(CTO)function... to provide ongoing technical/safety counsel to the Board. An ‘independent inquiry’ has been ordered. Is this inquiry too restricted in scope..Many feel that a comprehensive review is required and suggest that a retired judge or review panel be given authority to provide a broader , industry-wide review .Engineers would form a part of the review team.. Mining investment could be delayed unless the ‘environmental and economic’ concerns are addressed satisfactorily..by a ‘trusted reviewer’ to ensure public/political acceptance. The public expect the Corporation to carry FULL insurance coverage for mining incidents—a possible item for inclusion in the review ..... The public should not be worrying about ‘who pays’ for the next mining industry screw up ! Assuming the REVIEW offers common sense recommendations , a mining corporation Board ,who claim to provide corporate STEWARDSHIP,would be able to offer better protection of shareholders interests
