A congregation of preachers? My thanks to Kaye Compton for bringing her beautiful touch to the scriptures this past Sunday. She brought out the melody of the Micah text and helped us hear it anew. She also made me think a bit about other voices among us. How many of you have a sermon stirring in your heart? What if you could preach one Sunday? It may be that our congregation is full of preachers, those who, like Jeremiah, have something burning in their bones which they long to speak. Come talk with me about it and let’s explore together the idea of you preaching one Sunday. _____ During the past three-plus years, our church family has come to love Britt Hester. We’ve watched him blossom as a minister during his seminary studies and his leadership of our youth. In the past year, we’ve heard him preach and share the Good News in powerful ways. We understood that he possessed unique gifts for ministry and took a leap of faith to add him to our staff full time. This coming Sunday afternoon we will ordain Britt for the work of the Gospel. The call of God upon his life has been evident to us, as have the fruits of his ministry. This week, we take time as a church to set him apart for the lifetime vocation of serving God’s church. Britt’s ordination does more than give him personal credentials, though. By ordaining him, we are ensuring that the torch of proclaiming the Gospel is passed on to the next generation. For, as Paul says, “how can they hear about [Christ] unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent?” (Romans 10:14b-15, NLT). As a church, we have a heritage of calling and sending people into ministry. And I hope Britt will be the first of many more who will respond to God’s call. As Moses says, “I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit upon them all!” (Numbers 11:29, NLT). I wonder who will be next? See you Sunday.
