A copyright question. May I use a 15th century painting for my book cover? I downloaded the image from the Net. Here is an answer I found. Seems like I may, but what is your opinion? For example, if a photographer were to make an exact copy of the Mona Lisa, the resulting image would not be protected by copyright because an exact copy does not constitute an original work. However, if the same photographer were to photograph several people standing in front of the Mona Lisa, that picture could be copyrighted because there is some element of originality in the image. The law does not require much originality, but there has to be some. Also, only those parts of a work that are original can be copyrighted. Therefore, the copyright would not extend to any part of the Mona Lisa that might appear in the photograph. photolaw.net/common-questions-and-answers-about-copyright.html
