A counter to the tinsel fluff that is Christmas might be this short film following the Chukchi of Arctic Russia on a Walrus then whale hunt. Its both rewarding and unpretentious, if not particularly for anyone who doesnt like to think about animals as food. Incidentally both the Walrus and the whale are hunted the hard way ie. hand-thrown harpoons and muscle, and I havent seen such a hunt (re:the whale)since an old film following the Azores whalers in the 1970s. It takes a JCB to haul the medium-sized Right Whale onto the beach, but the hunters secure and pull it behind their small boats without a winch. As its flensed and butchered, there is a close-up of the carcass, and the clear sound of a stream; the gallons of blood pouring from it, which made me somewhat alarmingly aware of just how colossal a living thing a whale is and the physical and emotive feat of its capture. https://youtube/watch?v=i5n7cBnPirs
