A couple 2-3 years ago we started keeping back yard chickens. Originally as pets for Annika with a side benefit of help with groceries. Quickly I realized I really enjoyed them as well....BUT dreading the coming winter and remembering all too well how I hated having to go out or send Annika into the bitter wind/snow last winter to take care of them, I was privately considering having a butcher day. They have all but quit laying eggs, as they normally do during winter months.... ....and then I decided to make brownies this afternoon....box calls for 2 eggs....only had one in my fridge. I headed out the back door toward my coop hoping that one of the girls had left at least one for me today. I opened the nesting box door and there sets Belle....she clucked at me over her shoulder and I declare I heard her say .... excuse me! I need a little privacy here! With out thinking I quickly dropped the door as if I had opened an occupied bathroom stall. I apologized, stepped back, considered returning to the house and coming back in ten....but its a long walk back up to the house so I stood awkwardly waiting....and got the giggles.....and realized that if I bought my eggs from Walmart I wouldnt have enjoyed that little incident today.....soon Belle strutted out the front of the coop and I opened the nesting box door and retrieved my FRESH egg....brownies are now in the oven...and I guess the girls can loosen their hat ribbons for few more days I think I will leave their heads intact.
