A couple = 2, literally, but you can use to to replace two when you mean about two, for example: Im going on vacation for a couple of weeks. (=It may not be exactly 14 days) Ive seen that movie a couple of times. (=Im not sure exactly how many times) A couple is also used when you want to make a quantity sound small, for example: I have a couple of friends coming over later. (=It may be more than 2 friends, but Im making the party sound small) We ran into a couple of problems while entering the data. (=makes the problems sound minimal) As you can tell, a couple is only used with plural countable nouns.
