A couple of days ago Gary Socquet and I were walking Lyle the dog and looking forward to finishing so we could go to brunch and have a couple of Bloody Marys. Were down by the water and, as is his wont, Lyle scooped something up in his jaws and began chewing on it. Sometimes Ill let this go, mostly because it happens so often and at this point hes worn me down, but on and on he goes, chewing, chomping really, the something in his mouth obviously largish and gummy and not easy to chew. Also, he has this look on his face somewhere between shame and dismay, like I know I shouldnt be doing this but Im compelled and I dont really understand the compulsion. I stop and tell him to drop whatevers in his mouth. He stops chewing, looks up at me, again with that shame in his eyes. I tell him again to drop it, and this time he complies, opening his mouth and allowing the object to slide out, and we watch in horror as we realize that its A VERY MUCH USED TAMPON that hes been munching on. We skipped the Bloody Marys.
