A couple of days ago I saw a comment by someone on the subject of the EDL saying "At least they are doing something about this business in Woolwich." Clearly it was meant as a defence of the EDL, but it was rather wrong-headed, for you see it is not simply a question of "doing something", but of figuring out what needs to be done. It is the easiest thing in the world to" do something", especially something that is completely unhelpful, and this is the attitude which, in high places, leads to bad laws, "something must be done!" Yes, the criminals must be arrested, the crime thoroughly investigated, and justice must be done. But when a crime is committed the doing of things first of all is in the hands of the police, and they are the ones who must do what must be done.
