A couple of suggestions for the Dyroff Group while watching the World Cup. It’s always more fun to have a team to root for. First, despite reports to the contrary, those of us in the US who are sports fans, do get somewhat excited about the World Cup. Okay, it’s not the final playoffs for baseball, basketball, ice hockey or football (our football that is, which by the way, is an unfortunate name that, like our cumbersome system of measures, was handed down to us by the British). Still, it sports, and for most of us this is a special time. The Dyroff family has teams from Germany, the US, and Colombia (Sorry Paraguay, maybe next time). So, for me, I’m rooting for all those teams. Germany has a good chance (on paper) to win it all, so I expect I’ll be pulling for the Mother Country as the finals near. Believe it or not, I was in Europe, in 1966 for the World Cup Finals between Germany and England which, some say, England won. Those of you who haven’t been in a country where “football” is taken so seriously at the time of a big match are missing quite a “happening”. I was also in Colombia in 1994 when there was that unfortunate incident concerning the Colombian defender, Andres Escobar (I’ll not go into detail; you can look it up if you don’t know about it).
