A couple of weeks ago Ed started a good discussion on the influence of YouTube on playing style. I didnt comment at the time, because as usual the thread was several dozen comments in before I had chance to see it. But it made me think hard. Yes, initially YouTube played a part (but not solely) in the development of my style to an SE style, although I still use DE sometimes. But, Ive made sure to search out older players and watch and listen to them. By older I mean those players that have been around a while and perhaps play with a style we might call more traditional. So much video is freely available of new players and modern playing styles that I sometimes feel more traditional styles dont get the attention they deserve. Is this because there is less video of these players? I dont know. Anyway, by way of illustration, I came across this gem of video and I keep going back to it. Frank Torpey has been mentioned a couple of times of late, and I always liked his style, but I never saw this video until after Eds comment and I started digging for some older stuff. Certainly no boom-boom-pop, looks like an off-the shelf bodhran and little or no hand movement except to put pressure on and off the skin. Nothing fancy - yet this rhythm keeps me thoroughly engaged for the whole tune. This sort of playing influences me just as much as the newer styles. Youll need headphones or good speakers or the tonal change will be lost. https://youtube/watch?v=G1T2LZqrbzY
