A couple of years ago, I came across an authors thoughts on her blog (cant remember the author or blog, unfortunately :/ sorry - I never bookmarked it), and she was saying how, no matter how far you think you HAVENT come as a writer, and how far you HAVENT made it, someone will always think you have. Someone will think youve made it. You will be where someone is trying to get to, and you will always be reaching for that place that someone else is. This is so true. Im constantly bewildered when people are impressed and appear to think Ive made it as an author. I cant tell you how far I am from having made it in my own mind, lol. I have dreams of NYT bestseller lists and so on, like most other authors do, but I do feel I would have to modify my writing in some way to get there. Its no secret that, unless you luck out with a story so totally different to the norm that it goes viral, it tends to be a kind of formula that gets you up there, and Im not sure I want to write that. In the future, I want to write chillers and horrors, literary fiction, and edgy erotic dramas, as well as everything Im doing now / have done. I want to explore. And so the dream is [maybe temporarily] sacrificed for a deeper kind of happy that comes from writing exactly what I want, without thinking about what will get me up charts, but instead thinking about what I want to express. After all, life is too short to climb a ladder that doesnt take you where youre truly happy. But I am starting to become aware that there are those - other authors - that view me as where they would like to be. Yep - still bewildered! And appreciative, of course - thank you :) Maybe what we should all do is take a moment to admire ourselves and congratulate ourselves on where we are RIGHT NOW. Because, you know what? Most people dont even start. They only have the dream and dont make it a goal; dont take active steps, and while theyre dreaming about doing it, someone else is actually doing it. That is you - YOU ARE DOING IT. If you have started a book, finished a book, published your first book, THAT IS YOU. You are AWESOME. YOU are where someone else wants to be right now. Every step of the way, you have already made it. xx
