A courageous disabled man to climb Kilimanjaro A Bloemfontein man with a prosthetic leg is pushing the boundaries of his disability. He will summit Mount Kilimanjaro along with a team of ten people from the City to raise funds for the Association for People Living with Disabilities. Team Hope Kili wants to spread a message of hope and encouragement to people with disabilities to reach for their dreams. 29-year-old Godfrey Lobengu had his leg amputated after a car accident a couple of years ago. He lives off his disability grant, but he has dreams of a better future. As he trains everyday he hopes the Kilimanjaro climb will open doors for him. "I do this because I want my life to change, I want to get a good job, to go and get a good education," says Lobengu. Last weekend, the team tested their skills in the Drakensberg ahead of the big summit. "I’m expecting it to be hard, hard, hard road to go there, there is a big stone, small and dangerous ways for a man with disability, for a person with disability, the training will make me fit, and me too I feel I am fit," adds Lobengu. Team leader Gerhard Geldenhuis says, "Overcoming a disability is like climbing a mountain and when we reach the top, we want to tell people living with disabilities that you can reach your goals and dreams." The team will begin the climb on the 18th of July, the birthday of former President Nelson Mandela, which will make the day doubly special. The climb is expected to take five days.
