A crazy, marvelous story I have to share. Victor took me for a walk yesterday, and when he got tired we sat under a tree in the park. After a few minutes, a woman came over and said, I see you have a career-changed dog. I was astonished. Victor is, indeed, a dog that was trained to guide the blind, but his distraction factor kept him from completing the course (distraction means he will eat rocks, bees, bits of wood, etc.). The woman, who turned out to be an official for the Guide Dogs organization then said, Isnt it marvelous, the way theyre trained to be in work mode whenever their collar is on, and a regular dog when its off? I froze. Victor has never had his collar off since the day I got him. Never. And I always jokingly have said that the poor puppy was autistic, since he didnt respond to being petted. Stunned, I took his collar off as soon as I got home--and Victor turned into a different dog. He began to romp, wag his tail, and bring one toy after another to me to play with. Im still trying to grasp this fact and wonder why on earth no one at the Guide Dogs organization didnt mention this in person or in the stack of papers that came with Victor. He still isnt sure he likes being petted, but I think that he may come to enjoy it as an ordinary pup. In any case, what a revelation. A perfect surprise. My status is amazed and delighted!
