A curious omission in the training of historians: as a journalism student I well remember (more than 30 years later) the emphasis Joe Christle, who lectured in law in Rathmines, placed on us being aware of our responsibilities in regard to defamation. In 9 years as a history student, under and postgraduate, I do not recall the word being mentioned. As historians work more and more in the public eye, on radio television and presenting in other public fora, perhaps something for course directors to think of?
