A dangerous fitness a sport phenomena evolved in the past 15 years: a fixation on voyeurism-sponsored performing has overtaken the focus on meticulous personal development (and coaching). Fitness trainers have become circus monkeys trying to impress clients. And anyone with a cell phone can post the most ludicrous technique and gain exposure. Whoever has the most extreme workout often receives the most shares (including, like watching a train wreck, horrible technique spins the most viral, because we cant peel our eyes away from the Darwin award winner). Even athletes with very good technique dont understand how the coach programed the step-by-step progression for them to arrive at their level, so they end up showing the final development without all the graduations in between. People innocently assume that Extreme or Elite must be better. When I work with Olympic and national teams, irrespective of sport, it is widely understood that it requires 8 to 13 years to build an Olympian. It is not a three-month progression, not even a 2-year progression, but a long-range goal of 10 years carefully building the structure for a long career and life. The final step isnt as important as the next step. Its good to have goals. Its also important to avoid walking across a busy intersection at night wearing dark clothes and blindfolded... or at least, not encouraging others to follow such peril. #TechniqueFirst #BeTheTortoiseNotTheHare
