A day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah decided to constitute a high-level panel to suggest viable solution to the Tosa Maidan issue, Tourism Minister Ghulam Ahmed Mir Wednesday said his ministry was contemplating to propose a Development Authority for developing the area as a tourist resort. Talking to media persons here today, Mir said that owing to its location and vast landscape, Tosa Maidan has huge tourism potential and it could emerge as another major tourist destination of Kashmir. “We are thinking of proposing a Development Authority for Tosa Maidan and if it goes through we will start from developing Sutharan as there is no motorable road up to Tosa Maidan,” he said. Describing the place as extremely beautiful, he said Sutharan, located about eight kilometers from Tosa Maidan, would also be brought under the ambit of the proposed Tourism Development Authority. He said that beyond Sutharan there are vast and beautiful meadows spread all along Tosa Maidan which could attract a large number of trekkers. Avoiding comment on Army’s demand for re-notification of the meadow as a firing range, Mir said, “I don’t know what Army wants and what are its requirements, these things are to be decided by the government. But from tourist point of view, Tosa Maidan is an attractive place.” UC
